JAMESPORT — The Southwest High School Lady Wildcats have faced a different set of expectations this season after unexpectedly advancing to the Class 1 state tournament quarterfinals last March.
With several key players returning – although some significant ones had graduated – and some more talented youngsters moving up, the Ludlow-based girls were expected to be dominating most nights and win almost all – if not all – the close ones.
Losers a mere three times this season, the Lady Wildcats may not have quite met some of the lofty goals others – and perhaps they themselves – had set, but they have a chance to equal or surpass others.
Saturday afternoon at Tri-County School, Southwest displayed poise and persistence beyond many of their players’ years, overcoming a bad start which saw them trail the Winston Lady Redbirds by 11 points early in the second quarter to post a 55-45 conquest in the championship game of the Class 1 District 13 Tournament.
