BROOKFIELD – Outstanding seasons for the Meadville High School basketball teams – including what had been an undefeated one for the Eagles – came to an end in the opening round of Class 1 state tournament play at Brookfield High School Tuesday.
LaPlata’s boys avenged their sectional-round loss to MHS last year with a 59-53 triumph after the Marion County girls had turned back the Lady Eagles 37-24 in sectional games.
On the boys’ side, Meadville came in undefeated and looked for their second straight quarterfinal appearance.  LaPlata came in with two losses but looked to avenge a loss from a year ago to Meadville when the Bulldogs blew a fourth quarter lead in the same gym at Brookfield High School.  A strong fourth quarter along with some good free throw shooting allowed LaPlata to hand the Eagles their only loss on the season and advance to the quarterfinals at Missouri Valley College at Marshall Saturday to face a strong Pilot Grove team which took care of Bosworth 67-54.
The Marion County Lady Mustangs came into Tuesday night’s game as the top-ranked team in Missouri Class 1 and looking for their second straight trip to Columbia and the Final Four.  The Meadville Lady Eagles came in looking to knock off the top-ranked team and earn a showdown with fellow CLAA member Hardin-Central for the right to go to the Final Four, but in the end, the inside presence of Jessica Redd and Renay Sharpe were too much for the Lady Eagles to overcome and the Lady Mustangs won 37-24 and advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal at Missouri Valley College in Marshall.  They will face the Hardin-Central Lady Bulldogs, who blew a 14-point lead in the final quarter only to hit two free throws with 10 seconds left for a 46-45 victory over Pilot Grove.
Meadville finished an excellent season at 25-3 and look to have a lot coming back again next year.  Ka. Holcer, a sophomore, led MHS with 10 points and Maberry added four points and nine boards.
“That team finished second at state last year and had everyone back,” Meadville coach Tony Fairchild said.  “The girls have nothing to hang their heads about.”
“Offensively we didn’t get very good looks, but credit their defense,” Fairchild said of his team’s struggle on the offensive end of the court.  “The girls played hard. They always play hard,” he added.
