A too-generous trio of Chillicothe Mudcats pitchers handed the visiting Mac-N-Seitz Athletics a MINK League victory Friday night.
Inning-opening bases on balls led to single runs for the Athletics in the first, second, and seventh innings and three two-out walks after an inning-starting throwing error forced home the winning run in the top of the eighth as Mac-N-Seitz strolled past Chillicothe 4-3 at "June" Shaffer Memorial Park.
After missing a nice chance to re-tie the game in its eighth, Chillicothe (4-3, 3-3 MINK) loaded the bases in the ninth, but Justin Creel's bid for a two-out hit was snared by the second baseman ranging to his left to end it.
Cody Thompson, who worked 1-1/3 innings in relief of starter Matt Potter, picked up credit for the victory by the Kansas City-based visitors. Blake Holovach came on to throw two shutout frames for the save.
The loss belonged to Brandon Thompson, the third of four Chillicothe moundsmen.
The Mudcats, scheduled to host the Milgram Mustangs, a KC-based Ban Johnson League team, in a 7:05 p.m. Saturday non-league game threatened by an unfavorable weather forecast, out-hit Mac-N-Seitz 7-4, but paid the price for distributing nine free passes on the night. Chillicothe, uncharacteristically timid on the basepaths, grounded into three double plays in the first five innings against Potter before he faltered.
Down 2-0 through five, Chillicothe did all of its scoring in the sixth.
Newcomer Casey Solem's one-out single scored Brock LeBlanc, who'd started the uprising with a single. A sacrifice fly by Kyle Kinman plated Tyler Lloyd, who'd walked, tying the game. With two out and men at the corners, Tyson Parks stroked an opposite-field double just inside the left-field line to give the Mudcats the lead, but Robinette was an easy out at the plate trying to score from first.
