With one of their five seniors making the first big play of the game barely a minute in as he made the first start of his career at a new position and another helping an underclassman achieve a career highlight to provide the clinching play in the final minutes, the Chillicothe High School soccer Hornets’ “Senior Day” home finale was fitting from start to finish yesterday as they registered a 4-2 Midland Empire Conference victory over the St. Joseph: Benton Cardinals.
Mahonri Reyes, in his debut start as a goalkeeper after three years as a key member of the Hornets’ backfield, made a leaping grab of a long, high shot which threatened to put St. Joseph: Benton in front very early, and junior forward Colton Whiteside pounded in a CHS goal about a minute later to start a three-goal “hat trick” and four-point game he completed by converting a setup by senior Jarek Schmidt with a couple of minutes left in regulation time.
“It was neat to see Colton find the sweet spot and walk away with a “hat trick,” Allison said, undoubtedly hoping Whiteside and current freshman Peterson can combine to be a potent front-line duo for next year’s team.
