Third place now is the best any Chillicothe High School wrestler can do at this year’s Class 2 state tournament following Friday morning’s championship quarterfinals loss by Tyler Skipper.
Skipper, who won his first-round bout with a late move yesterday, was pinned by Platte County’s Brock St. Louis this morning at the University of Missouri’s Mizzou Arena. The match lasted only 1:10. No other details were available before press time.
"Brock's pretty tough. Good on his feet," CHS head coach Dave Kinen said yesterday by way of a scouting report on Skipper’s quarterfinal obstacle.
That sent the CHS senior 160-pound entry into the second round of consolation wrestleback bouts early Friday afternoon. His foe was to be Gabe Suthoff, a junior from Clinton with a 34-12 record. Skipper now is 23-10.
Should either or both of those Hornets win this afternoon, they’ll go back into action tonight in a third-round wrestleback bout. If they reach that round and win again, they’ll clinch a state medal.
Also still alive for CHS was junior 189-pounder Nick Plummer, who won his first-round wrestleback bout by a pin Thursday afternoon.
Plummer also was to wrestle his second consolation bout early Friday afternoon against Elliott Pratt of Affton (28-10).
Skipper was the only Hornet of the three who actually wrestled Thursday to come off the mat victorious in the first round.
At 112 pounds, Gage Vinson nearly came back late from a 4-0 deficit, but fell to Taylor Spackler of Clinton, 4-2.
He then saw his first trip to state conclude the same day with a 17-7 major-decision loss to Ste. Genevieve's Jesse Martinelli in the first round of consolation wrestlebacks.
At 189 pounds, junior Nick Plummer gave a good account of himself against the tournament favorite, unbeaten Dustin Williams of St. Joseph: Benton, losing an 8-0 major decision in the opening round.
CHS sophomore Jackson Cairns, qualified to compete in the 103-pound category, could not wrestle, having come down with pneumonia, according to Kinen, early in the week.
