Chillicothe High School Hornets Tyler Skipper and Nick Plummer stand one win away from clinching 2010 state tournament medals after pinning their respective opponents Friday afternoon in the second round of consolation wrestleback bouts at the Class 2 2010 Missouri State High School Activities Association Championships.
Skipper, a senior, hiked his record to 24-10 and kept his prep career going at least one more match by dispatching Gabe Suthoff of Clinton in 4:15 early Friday afternoon.
That advanced Skipper to the third or quarterfinal round of the consolation bracket where he was to face Joe Zimmer (43-8) of Logan-Rogersville Friday night.
Plummer won in the 189-pound category, needing only 75 seconds to polish off Elliott Pratt of Affton. Plummer improved his record to 32-12.
He'll meet a wrestler with a similar record – Taylor Danner (36-12), an Oak Grove senior – in the consolation quarterfinals Friday night. The winner of that bout will be assured of no worse than sixth place and a state medal and could still finish as high as third.
Third-round consolation wrestleback bouts, along with the championship semifinals, will be part of a session beginning at about 6 p.m. Friday in the University of Missouri's Mizzou Arena.
Consolation winners Friday night go into semifinal bouts Saturday morning with winners then meeting for third place and losers for fifth in the afternoon.
