ST. JOSEPH — Just a few inches and Chillicothe High School’s soccer Lady Hornets could have walked away the victor for a fifth-straight game Saturday. Unfortunately, in sports, close only counts in horseshoes.
The Lady Hornets were just off the mark with several shots at the St. Joseph: Bishop LeBlond Lady Golden Eagles’ net. In the end, those near-misses spelled the difference between triumph and what became a 2-1 loss.
Despite being out-shot, the Lady Hornets had the better chances at putting the ball past LeBlond goalkeeper Jacque Warner, but despite drawing her out of position a few times and firing other shots past her, only one CHS shot – Madeline Brick’s drive off Kylie Barton’s pass midway through the second half – found its way into the net in a Midland Empire Conference defeat.
The lack of accuracy or precision may have had its roots in fatigue. The rainout make-up was their fourth match in six days.
“We started a little flat and had a harder time adjusting to the play than we had in the previous three games of the week,” observed CHS head coach Bill Allison.
“The week maybe finally caught up to them physically and emotionally.”
Saturday’s defeat lowered Chillicothe’s fine record to 9-4 with two regular-season matches remaining this week before next week’s district tournament. In the MEC, Chillicothe slipped to 3-2.
The Lady Hornets will play St. Joseph: Lafayette in their last home game and have “Senior Day” Tuesday at Danner Park, starting at 4:30 p.m.
“I urge everyone to come out and root the girls on to another victory,” said Allison.
Terming LeBlond  “a very physical team,” Allison related, “every time the Lady Hornets went to pass or turn the ball, a defender was there to match up with them.”
Bishop LeBlond had the early edge in play and got a payoff, finding the net in the 11th minute on a strike from Sarah Downey.
After that goal, Chillicothe’s coaches made a few defensive position adjustments, Allison related. Annie Steely was moved to the outside with the speedier Catherine Tipton moving to the middle to play alongside Kati Jo Ross, who has been playing with a very sore leg, the coach reported. This combination seemed to work in shutting the Lady Golden Eagles’ attack.
Still a 1-0 game at the start of the second half, Chillicothe picked up the tempo and turned the tide.
