Junior Nick Plummer of the Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets Friday night clinched a medal in Class 2 of the 2010 Missouri State High School Activities Association Championships.
Plummer did so by decisively defeating Taylor Danner of Oak Grove 10-3 in the consolation wrestlebacks quarterfinals.
Plummer (33-12) was to wrestle twice Saturday – first in the consolation semifinals against Marshon Eddings (37-11) of Berkeley: McCluer South of suburban St. Louis during the morning hours and then against either Levi Maggard of Carl Junction or Taylor Smith of Platte County for third or fifth place at around 1:30 p.m. Maggard went into his consolation semifinal bout with Smith 38-7 and Smith was 38-12.
While Plummer reached the final six to clinch a state medal, Chillicothe senior Tyler Skipper fell one victory shy.
On the precipice of medaling, Skipper fell to Joe Zimmer of Logan-Rogersville by fall Friday night. The bout lasted only 46 seconds, leaving Skipper with a final 2009-10 record of 24-11.
Chilliicothe had two other state qualifiers this year, but neither was able to win – one for health reasons.
Sophomore Jackson Cairns could not try to wrestle at 103 pounds because he came down with pneumonia in the days leading up to the state tournament.
Freshman Gage Vinson made it at 112 pounds, but was defeated by decision in both of his bouts Thursday.
Plummer puts Chillicothe back on the medals stand after a one-year absence. The most-recent Hornet to medal were Stephen Quinn at 145 pounds and Charlie Pepper at 130 in 2008. Last year ended a run of four-straight years in which CHS had a state medal-winner.
