After generating a jolt of their own in the form of nine runs in taking the first game of Friday’s home doubleheader with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Grays, the streak-riding Chillicothe Mudcats got an abbreviated sweep of the pair when Mother Nature started cranking out her own electricity.
Following a dominating 9-0 triumph in game one behind the pitching of Andrew Dunn and Lance Guidroz and hitting of Luke Schlechte, the Mudcats picked up a
3-1 five-inning decision in the nightcap when persistent, extensive lightning around the region prompted the game to be terminated early for safety reasons.
The dual wins lifted the Mudcats to 12-7 overall and 9-5 in the MINK League, where they’re running a fairly-distant second to the Beatrice (Neb.) Bruins. FCA dropped to 9-11, 6-9.
"It was a good two wins for us in the league," said Chillicothe head coach Justin “Jud” Kindle.
As has been their wont of late, the Mudcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the opener Friday, tallying once in the first inning and three times in the second while starter Andrew Dunn was throwing goose eggs at the Grays.
The remainder of the Mudcats’ scoring came in the fifth inning when they produced five hits and five more runs.
In game two, the Mudcats snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the third inning and rode Aaron Meade’s pitching the rest of the way to victory and the sweep.
Statistically, Schlechte’s 2-for-3 game with two doubles, a run scored, and four knocked in was the big bat in game one. His batting average climbed to .415, moving back past Dominic D’Anna for the team lead. Going one for three, D’Anna’s mark declined four points to an even .400.
With two bunt hits, Matty Johnson extended his hitting streak to 11 games and raised his once-paltry average to a respectable .247.
In game two, southpaw Meade (2-0) from Missouri State ended up with a complete game, allowing one run on three hits. He whiffed seven Grays while walking two and hitting one in lowering his earned run average to 2.00.
Johnson kept his hitting streak going with a 2-for-3 effort. Schlechte and D’Anna each had an RBI.
