The CHS soccer team traveled to Atchinson, Kan., on Tuesday and made a much better appearance than they did in their home opener on Saturday. TheHornets played a very physical Maur Hill team for 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, before losing by one goal in penalty kicks.
The Hornets, starting three players in their first varsity game and three more for just their second game, came out playing well, maintaining much better ball control and using the whole field. The better play paid dividends in the 26th minute on a heads-up play by Grant Peterson to put a rebounded ball in after Colton Whiteside just missed scoring as it was blocked by the Maur Hill keeper. Peterson scored in the 26th minute and notched his first goal of his varsity career. It would only take the Hornets 10 minutes more to score their second goal when the ball was handled by a Maur Hill defender in the penalty area, allowing Laine Saunders to step and bury the ball past the keeper for his first goal of the season, giving Chillicothe their second goal. Play matched up pretty even throughout the half and ended with Chillicothe leading 2-0. Troy Toadebusch made several stops in the half and was more relaxed, gaining very valuable game time with every play.
The Hornets had their hands full from the start of the second half, fouling a Raven attacker in the penalty area, allowing them to convert and cut the lead to 2-1. Peterson would once again put the Hornets up by 2 tallies, when Jarek Schmidt assisted him on his second goal of the evening. Maur Hill was not finished as they started mounting several attacks on goal, scoring in the 66th and 75th minute to tie the score at 3-3.
In the 20 minute overtime, Chillicothe mounted several attacks and missed scoring a goal by just inches, but both offenses were shut out in the overtime period. The game then would be determined by penalty kicks where the Ravens outshot Chillicothe 4-3, with Toadebusch getting a hand on the last shot, but not enough to keep it out of the net.
