The Fulton Hornets gave Chillicothe High School soccer Hornets freshman goalkeeper Troy Toedebusch quite a workout Saturday, but the goalie and the team in front of him held up fairly well in a 7-0 loss.
Going into the opening game of the season, it was already predicted that it was going to be a tough game for the CHS Hornets.
Fulton’s Hornets have a well-established program and are in an area, with Columbia close by, where they can play soccer a good portion of the year.
The experienced visitors from Callaway County controlled the action 95 percent of the time in virtually duplicating last year’s 7-1 home win, but never were able to overwhelm Chillicothe on a bright, sunny morning.
“It was a tough game for our freshmen to start” their varsity careers, Chillicothe head coach Bill Allison commiserated, “but just like the rest of the team they did not give up and played to the final whistle.”
Toedebusch had a shaky start in his Hornets debut in goal, his coach observed, “but then settled in to play a much better game after the first 20 minutes or so.
“He gained very valuable experience that can be only learned through game time.  It was good to see him settle down and play to his ability, especially in the second half.”
Toedebusch made 21 saves against a very skilled team, several of them from very close range as he showed a good combination of aggressive, agility and instinct.
Freshman Chase Reeter had a good game filling a spot in the central part of the midfield, along with Grant Peterson who played up top, Allison noted.
