Chillicothe High School’s 2009-10 varsity basketball seasons saw improvement from the prior year on the girls’ side and in-season improvement which sparks hope for the future on the boys’, the respective head coaches related during their remarks at last night’s annual postseason awards event honoring the athletes.
Players on the varsity, junior-varsity, and freshman levels were introduced and presented their letters or certificates for participation at the approximately 1:45 banquet and program in the high school commons.
Also introduced and presented their letters were members of the winter dance team and basketball cheerleaders.
At the conclusion of their presentations, boys’ head coach Matt Brownsberger and retiring girls’ head coach Karen Jackson disclosed the recipients of this season’s special awards.
For the Hornets, senior Bryce Young copped both the Coaches’ Award (sponsored by Woody’s Automotive Group) and Free-Throw Accuracy (sponsored by KCHI Radio) awards, senior Brett Stephens the Hustle award (sponsored by Barnes Baker Automotive), and junior Blake Stephens and the Rebounding award (sponsored by the Constitution-Tribune).
For the Lady Hornets, senior Rochelle Gillilan also was a double-winner, taking the Hustle (sponsored by Hometown Pharmacy) and Rebounding (sponsored by the Constitution-Tribune) laurels. Senior Leanne Mathew took the Assists award (sponsored by Lauhoff Jewelry) and junior Kelsey Hicks the Free-Throw Accuracy award (sponsored by KCHI Radio).
