Chillicothe High School’s basketball Lady Hornets have an uneven season, but at least they finished their regular schedule on the upswing.
Last night, the Lady Hornets won their second game in a row after nine consecutive losses, holding off the visiting Cameron Lady Dragons 44-38 on “Senior Night.”
In the end, it came down to which was better – Chillicothe’s defense or Cameron’s rebounding and better free-throw shooting – and the nod went the home team’s way.
The Lady Hornets made 16 steals, according to team statisticians, and influenced 22 Cameron turnovers while holding the Lady Dragons without a field goal in the last nine-plus minutes and held their guests to 27 percent shooting luck.
That proved more beneficial for them than Cameron’s huge 48-27 advantage in rebounds, which included a 14-board night for Azalee Morgan, and its 12-of-17 foul shooting, compared with Chillicothe’s 9-of-18.
"I didn't feel like we rebounded well," Chillicothe head coach Karen Jackson stated after her team improved to 8-14 and finished 2-5 and in sixth place in the tough Midland Empire Conference standings.
"It could have made it a lot easier there at the end" if the Lady Hornets had shot free throws better late, the coach added. Chillicothe had four late misses when it was trying to seal the win, but bailed itself out with good defense.
"Give it to the kids,” stated Jackson. “They played hard. They didn't quit on defense and came out with the win."
Chillicothe now will head into the Class 4 District 16 Tournament at Smithville next week.
They’ll open Monday at 5:30 p.m. against fourth-seeded Savannah, which will come in on a high after upsetting Class 3 No. 2-ranked Maryville 54-44 at Maryville last night.
Savannah (16-7) finished 4-3 in the MEC by shocking the Lady Spoofhounds (17-3, 4-1), who recently knocked off conference title favorite St. Joseph: Benton, but now will likely end up sharing the title with Benton.
Kate Gallagher scored 14 points, Kelsey Adams 12, Gailynn Kelly 11, and Lindsey Partridge 10 for the Lady Savages.
"I feel like we've got a good shot,” Jackson said, before learning of Savannah’s triumph at Maryville, of the pairing with SHS’ Lady Savages.
“We've got to come being able to score some points," she said of the key to her team’s hopes.
