KIRKSVILLE – Delayed by weather from December, the Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets’ long trip to Kirksville last night hardly seemed worth it when all was said and done.
Traveling nearly two hours to match up with last year’s decisive Class 2 state champions, the Hornets soon were on the road back, beaten
74-5 in a dual match in which only one bout went the six-minute distance.
Chillicothe’s lone victory on the night came in the 171-pound weight class when Blake Brose pinned Derek Johnson in 3:47.
The only bout which lasted three full periods not only ended up as a Chillicothe loss as Nick Plummer was edged 3-1 by Alec Rentschler, but resulted in a one-point team penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, reducing the Hornets’ team total from the six Brose had just earned to five. The team was docked for Plummer taking down his singlet shoulder straps before leaving the mat, according to a C-T source.
