Colton Whiteside nets winner off Pryor rush after Grant Peterson tied it 1-1 in second half
A little justice came the way of Chillicothe High School’s soccer Hornets yesterday.
The team, in only its third year of existence and plagued by injuries this season, rallied to defeat the Maur Hill Academy Ravens of Atchison, Kan., 2-1 when Colton Whiteside’s sharp-angle shot deflected off the MHA goalkeeper’s hands and into the net with about 20 minutes left.
“This one was needed after we let a lead slide away in the first outing (at Maur Hill Sept. 1) and lost on PKs (shootout penalty kicks),” CHS coach Bill Allison commented after his team improved to 2-9 while snapping a four-game losing skid.
The Hornets “outplayed and out possessed the Ravens by a wide margin in the first half,” Allison reported, but ended up on the short end of the stick when Raven forward Dennis Wong slid one by Hornets ’keeper Jarek Schmidt in the 22nd minute.
“We had so many close chances to score, but just could not find the net,” lamented Allison.
With continuity “very tough,” the coach noted, because of position juggling throughout the season prompted by the many injuries, communication is “that much more important.” The lack of knowledge of where teammates are or might be going has hamstrung Chillicothe’s attack as it tries to finish off rushes and scoring chances.
Down 2-1 despite having the better of the first-half play, the Hornets come out with the determination to pull the comeback off and got what they sought.
In the 49th minute, a good move by Colton Whiteside opened up space, allowing for a good shot. It beat the Ravens’ goalkeeper, but hit the goal post, rebounding into the goal area. CHS freshman Grant Peterson beat the Maur Hill defense to the ball and put it in to tie it.
About 10 minutes later, the Hornets used some good combination play and a Good carom to get the eventual game-winner.
Getting the ball into the Ravens’ half of the field near the right side, the Hornets got it to Nate Pryor. He made a determined rush, fending off Ravens defenders a couple of times to maintain control as he looked for a chance to angle the ball in toward the goal on the dribble or make a centering pass or cross to the far side.
Eventually getting to about 10 yards from the goal line, but well off to the right side, Pryor finally found room to drive the ball goal-ward in an apparent shot attempt.
It sailed over the ’keeper’s head, but curved away from the net and beyond it to the left side. However, Whiteside had filtered down that side in case Pryor made a cross and tracked the ball down a few yards from the goal line and about 10-15 yards wide of the net.
Spinning to wheel past a charging defender, Whiteside pounded a right-footed shot back into the goalmouth as ’keeper Theo Curry hurried across from the opposite side, slightly out from the goal and unable to establish his best position.
Whiteside’s shot, just above head high and arcing toward the net, forced Curry to reach high and to his right, where he got his hands on it, but couldn’t catch it. Instead, the ball bounced off and into the net a few yards inside the near goalpost.
Each team had scoring chances in the final 21-plus minutes, but couldn’t find the net.
The Chillicothe defense played well, Allison praised, with Jacob Stull, Mahonri Reyes, and Brice Griffin going the whole 80 minutes while Austin Ireland (still suffering from a nagging injury) and Jeremiah Applebury filling the last backline spot.
