CAINSVILLE — The defending champion Southwest Lady Wildcat softball team defeated Pattonsburg and Cainsville Saturday to win the second-annual Cainsville Tournament.
The championship game saw Southwest handle the hosts 10-2 behind 15 hits. Third baseman Stephanie Thomas went three for three, Winning pitcher Cori Locker was three for four, and Alex Black, Sydnee Rounkles, Caitlin Cramer, and Cortney Roberts all had two hits.
The defensive play of the game came on the final out when a high popup centered itself between Thomas at third and Locker. After looking at each other several times and both calling the other’s name while moving toward the ball, Locker had to dive at the last second to make the catch.
Facing Pattonsburg in the first game proved more challenging as Southwest squeaked by 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth and final frame.
The game began with a leadoff single by Black and a steal of second base. Locker’s sacrifice bunt sent her to third and Rounkles’ groundout earned her an RBI.
Pattonsburg tied it the third inning on a deep hit to right field by pitcher Courtney Warford, driving in Sarah Emerson who had also tripled on a deep hit to right.
In the fourth, Lady Wildcats shortstop Roberts led off with a single and, after stealing second, scored on an RBI single by Thomas to restore Southwest to a one-run advantage.
Pattonsburg answered in the fifth. Emily Dilley walked and scored with two outs on another hit by Warford.
Southwest scored the winner in the top of the sixth. Roberts again opened the inning with a single and Thomas drove her in with a double. With the time limited expired the Lady Wildcats defense held strong in the bottom half as Locker notched two strikeouts and a grounder to first was handled routinely by Cramer.
Locker had five strike outs and two walks against Pattonsburg, while Warford dished up eight strikeouts and one walk.
Saturday’s victories boosted Southwest’s record to 3-0. The Ludlow-based team had clipped Hardin-Central 8-1 Thursday in the Lady Wildcats’ home opener.
The bottom half of the Southwest lineup produced all of the runs against Hardin-Central.
