MARYVILLE — With the Mercer Lady Cardinals’ 46-45 last-seconds loss to Conception Junction: Jefferson in the Class 1 high school basketball state tournament Tuesday night, the record-setting season of MHS freshman Sierra Michaelis came to an end.
The 5’10” freshman scored a game-high 27 points as the Lady Cardinals sustained their only loss of the season after 27 victories when Jefferson hit a follow shot with less than two seconds left.
With her 27 points, Michaelis – niece of Sherry (Mrs. Scott) Stephens of Chillicothe – averaged right at 28 points per game with a total of approximately 780 points, both breaking the state records for a ninth grader, as listed in the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s record book.
The young star’s points total eclipsed the 746 netted by Hannah Wilkerson of Miller in 2006-07 when the southwest Missouri player also averaged a record 26.6 per game.
