City of Hale Addresses Community Questions Regarding New Nuisance Ordinance

HALE — The City of Hale has adopted a revised Nuisance Ordinance in response to growing concerns and complaints from residents regarding property upkeep throughout the city. Mayor Nicholas Wilson and the Hale City Council would like to address several common questions from the community regarding this updated ordinance.

Why is the City addressing nuisance ordinances now?

The City of Hale has always maintained a nuisance ordinance. However, the previous version—originally written in 2016—was 22 pages long and filled with complex legal terminology, making it difficult for the average resident to understand. The newly adopted ordinance is a streamlined, five-page document that simplifies the language while preserving the intent.

Contrary to concerns about increased regulation, the new ordinance actually grants more flexibility to property owners. The key difference is that the ordinance will now be actively enforced. This action comes after numerous complaints about neglected properties during the current administration. The City Council is responding with a renewed commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming community.

How will the City remain impartial in enforcement?

To ensure fair and unbiased enforcement, the City of Hale will contract with the Green Hills Regional Planning Commission. A trained code enforcement officer from the commission will visit Hale on a regular basis to document violations in a neutral, consistent manner. These findings will then be presented to the City for review. If violations are confirmed, property owners will receive official notices along with instructions for compliance.

What if a resident is unable to fix a nuisance violation on their own?

Mayor Wilson and the City Council understand that some residents may face financial or physical challenges in addressing violations. The City is committed to helping those in need. Mayor Wilson is currently working on support initiatives, and community members are already stepping up to assist their neighbors.

“If you need help resolving a nuisance issue, please don’t hesitate to reach out,” said Mayor Wilson. “We’ll work to connect you with volunteers and resources to get the problem resolved. That’s what living in a small town is all about—neighbors helping neighbors.”
