Soccer Lady Hornets Get Stuck in Neutral Offensively in Opening Home Tourney

A frustrating, second-half sequence that illustrates how close Chillicothe High School’s soccer Lady Hornets were to getting their 2024 season off to a bang-up start in their own tournament last Friday and Saturday, a shot off the foot of CHS’ Hayden Hansen (obscured by a Kirksville player near middle of top photo) heads upward at left after having sailed past the goalkeeper, only to strike the goal’s crossbar. In the lower photo, as that sequence continues, Alice Hurtgen’s header shot on the rebound of Hansen’s shot off the crossbar also turns out to be narrowly too high, clearing the crossbar to strike the lower side of the overhanging football goalposts crossbar on Bob Fairchild Field at Chillicothe’s award-winning Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium II. When these and two other great scoring chances during CHS’ three matches failed to produce goals, the Lady Hornets sustained shutout losses to Lone Jack, Marshall and Kirksville to begin their new season.
