Chillicothe R-2 District Superintendent Dr. Roger Barnes addressed the crowd gathered on the second floor of the Livingston County Library on Thursday (Oct. 4), at a press conference concerning Proposition B, the proposed tax increase on cigarettes which would benefit the Missouri education system. Missouri currently has the lowest tax rate on cigarettes, at $0.17 per pack. The national average is $1.46 per. The proposal would up Missouri's tax by an additional $0.73 per pack. Per Barnes, the cigarette tax would bring in additional state revenue of between $299,000 and $447,000 for the R-2 district, alone.
