Donald Audsley Ballew, 75, of Burlington, died at 6:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Donald was born Sept. 9, 1937 in Hale, Mo., the son of Audsley McDowell and Gladys Rena Barlow Ballew. On Aug. 10, 1969, he married Julie Sue Hanson in Clarkson Valley, Mo.

Don worked 53 years in sales and was currently working for Stine Seed in Adel, Iowa.

He was a 1955 graduate of Hale High School. He graduated in 1961 from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo., with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, and storytelling. He was a talented poet as well as a lover of music.

Survivors include his wife, Sue; three sons, Jeffrey (Kara) Ballew, Orem, Utah, Christopher (Selma) Ballew, Houston, Texas, and David Ballew, Burlington; four daughters, Sarah Behunin, Hazelton, Idaho, Emily (Tom) Ferguson, Wayland, Iowa, Julie (Michael) Schissel, Port Washington, N.Y., and Rebecca (John) McDermott, Cascade, Iowa; 28 grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn Monson, Derby, Kan., and Nancy (Barry) Anderson, Chillicothe, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Bonnie Ballew, Dallas, Texas; and 19 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Dale Ballew.

The funeral service for Mr. Ballew will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with Bishop Jonathan Snow officiating. Burial will be in Hale Cemetery in Hale, Mo., at 3 p.m., Tuesday. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home.
