Come fall 2024, the nearly-century-old “Bell Game” high school football clash between county schools Brookfield and Marceline will return to being a conference game for the first time since 1971. That is as a result of last week’s quick-moving decisions by both districts to leave their current conference homes – the Lewis and Clark (Marceline) and Clarence Cannon (Brookfield) – and became part of the expanded Grand River Conference, playing in its east (larger/11-man football) division. The changes reunite four of the five charter members of the original North Central Missouri Conference (Brookfield, Marceline, Milan, Trenton), as well as a fifth school (Putnam County) which also was part of the NCMC with those four when it dissolved after the 1970-71 school year.
