For the first time in two years the annual Fishing Derby was held this year. About 180 kids enjoyed a morning of fishing Saturday, June 4 at the Baptist Home in Chillicothe. The fishing derby began at 9 a.m., and kids were invited to show up with their families and fish in the pond located in the Baptist Home’s front lawn. Steve Shoot said they have not been able to have the fishing derby in a couple years due to COVID, and this year was a great turnout. The last time the fishing derby was held in 2020, they had roughly 100 kids show up to fish, with this year nearly doubling that. Shoot said he would like to thank all their sponsors for allowing them to hold this event.

The Strand Hotel, built in 1924, is a rare Chillicothe example of the Mission/Spanish Revival style with a decorative, carved roofline topped with stone pendants. Elaborate terra cotta cornices separate the fourth and fifth floors which were added in 1929. The Mission style awning on Clay Street is still present and the neon sign on the Washington Street side may be original. This building has a quiet elegance.
