Memorial Day weekend is a highly anticipated opportunity for people to enjoy Missouri’s state parks, lakes, sporting events, and attractions. This means more travelers on Missouri’s roadways and an increase in boating traffic on the state’s lakes and rivers. Drivers and boat operators are reminded to follow all Missouri’s laws and be courteous. Safety should always be part of your weekend plans. Always wear a seat belt when traveling in a vehicle and wear a life jacket when near, on, or in the water.

“In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row on row … .” So begins “In Flanders Fields,” written in 1915 by John McCrae, a Canadian poet and military physician. “The hauntingly eloquent words of McCrae helped to immortalize poppy as one of the most recognized symbols honoring soldiers who have died in combat,” said University of Missouri Extension horticulturist David Trinklein.

The Missouri State Fair is accepting nominations for Veteran/Active Military Honoree of the Day, through July 5. The program is sponsored by Capital Materials, Retrieving Freedom, Inc., and Starline Brass.

Recently, Governor Mike Parson announced the launch of a public website to help guide access to Missouri’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The website, moarpa.mo.gov, enables visitors to learn about how ARPA State Fiscal Recovery Funds are being spent in Missouri. The website will also provide information on how Missouri organizations, non-profits, municipalities, businesses, communities, and other entities can apply for the State’s ARPA funds.

The second annual Linn County Extreme Bull Ride will be held this Saturday at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Brookfield. The event, sponsored by Brookfield Vet Clinic and Linn County Fair Board, begins with gates opening at 5:30 p.m., Mutton Bustin’ at 6 p.m., and bull riding at 7 p.m.

The ramp from eastbound U.S. Highway 36 to southbound Interstate 29 will close next week for signal and lighting repairs. Crews from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will close the ramp on Monday, May 23, from 8 a.m. to noon, in order inspect and make repairs to an underground lighting circuit.

SENSENICH INDUCTED INTO THE HONOR SOCIETY OF PHI KAPPA PHI Sean Sensenich, Chillicothe, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Sensenich was initiated at Fort Hays State University.
