JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Some Missouri homeowners could be spared from paying higher property taxes under a pair of proposed constitutional amendments approved Wednesday by the state Senate.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Prescribed Fire Council (MPFC) encourage landowners, land managers, and others who conduct prescribed burns on private land to “Log Your Burn” through the MPFC website at moprescribedfire.org.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has once again sent a letter to Sullivan County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Keedy asking again for a criminal investigation regarding workers at the Smithfield Fresh Meats’ Milan plant after the organization obtained documentation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealing that workers allegedly struck pigs with a hard plastic paddle, including in the head, at the plant near Milan in November of 2021.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has announced eight Missouri Gold Star Schools for 2022 and Chillicothe’s Dewey Elementary School is one of them. The program, which aligns with the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, recognizes schools for outstanding academic achievement or for performing at high levels while serving a significant proportion of disadvantaged students.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has announced the retirement of K-9 Zaki. “The LCSO with support from our amazing community raised funds in 2014 and 2015 to purchase to implement a K-9 program with the sheriff’s office,” Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox said in a press release.
