Soil Testing is a Valuable Tool

Nutrient deficiencies negatively affect plants’ ability to perform at peak level. Having soil analyzed for nutrients is the only way to know what is readily available for the growing plants. Applying too much fertilizer or lime can also have a negative effect on plant growth. Excessive fertilizer is not only a waste of money, excessive nutrients can have a detrimental effect on the environment if they runoff into surface water or leach through the soil profile into groundwater.

Dr. Neal recognized for years of service on Hedrick board

Jane T. Neal, DDS, recently retired from her position as a member of the Hedrick Medical Center Board of Directors. She had been a member of the Hedrick board for 13 years. Dr. Neal graduated with a BSN in nursing from the University of Missouri in Columbia. She then went to work for St. Louis Children’s Hospital while her husband attended dental school. Upon her husband’s graduation from dental school, the family moved to Chillicothe, where Dr. Neal worked as a school nurse for five years. In 1989, she decided to apply to dental school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She was accepted and graduated in 1993. Upon graduation from UMKC, Dr. Neal joined her husband, David M. Neal, DMD, in his dental practice. The two of them practiced general dentistry together at Neal Family Dentistry in Chillicothe for many years. They both retired from the practice on May 3, 2020.

MU announces creation of the Missouri Water Center

The University of Missouri today announced the creation of the Missouri Water Center, a central hub for research on the state’s water resources. The new academic center will combine existing resources and improve coordination across campus — tackling emerging water quality issues and factors that contributed to record flooding in 2019 and years of persistent drought — as well as facilitate new collaborations among faculty, government and industry partners.

Missouri Attorney General joins nationwide investigation into TikTok

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt joined a nationwide investigation into TikTok for providing and promoting its social media platform to children and young adults while use is associated with physical and mental health harms. Attorneys General nationwide are examining whether the company violated state consumer protection laws that put the public at risk.

PETA claims Smithfield Foods should be investigated

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) an American animal rights organization has sent a letter to Sullivan County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Keedy investigate Smithfield Food’s Milan plant after the organization obtained documentation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealing that workers kicked a pig, and struck other pigs with a hard plastic paddle, including in the head, at the plant near Milan.
