On April 30, Liberty United Methodist Church celebrated 150 years in ministry. The day included preaching by North Central District Superintendent Reverend Mi Hyeon Lee, messages from former pastors and members read by Pastor Lisa Morris, a display of historical pictures and documents, and lunch after worship. In 1843, Cap Bowen formed a Sunday school in a log cabin school about two miles from the current Liberty UMC location. In 1873, Rev. Charles Mosher, a Methodist minister from Dawn, held a series of meetings and Liberty Church was organized. H. M Seiberling suggested the name which came from 2 Corinthians 3:17—”Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.” Founding members included Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Seiberling, Mr. and Mrs. Charles K. Moser, Mrs. T. E. McKerlie, W. R. Coe, Mr. and Mrs. Silas Stone, and Mrs. Henry Bean. Dave Seiberling and Martha (Seiberling) McIntyre, great-grandchildren of those founding Seiberlings, continue the tradition as active members of Liberty UMC today!
