16th Annual Chillicothe Polar Plunge raises more than $9,900 for Special Olympics

The 16th Annual Chillicothe Polar Plunge on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Simpson Park was a splashing success, raising $9,900 to date. A total of 49 brave men and women from around the area donned disco-themed costumes and swimwear to take the chilly dip. Their Reason for Freezin’… the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO).

Blue Mound mystery solved

This photo on the front cover of “The Blue Mound Chronicles” book shows a gentleman labeled; Dr Biship (sic) dressed in what appears to be a buffalo skin coat (second from right). Gary Maberry, co-author of the book, and I tried unsuccessfully to find out who he was and what his connection was to Blue Mound before the book was published. Recently, I found two articles in the May 12, 1899 issue of the Braymer Bee newspaper listing his obituary and funeral. He was Dr. Calvin S. Bishop who practiced medicine in the Braymer area and died at the age of 46 (5 years after the photo was taken) and is buried in the Plymouth Cemetery. The photo was provided by Joe Barnes of Kearny, Missouri Submitted by Joe G. Dillard, Senior Author of “The Blue Mound Chronicles: Stories and History of a Small Missouri Town.”

Pastor’s Pen: Check your motivation

Last week I talked about indecisiveness, the fact that “Indecisiveness will kill you.” This week I will explore another thing I say to myself often that I also share with others when the situation calls for it. “Never underestimate the power of your second motivation. Just make sure your second motivation doesn’t become your first.” It is good now and then to check our motivations. We do different things in life because of different motivations. And we are wise to be acutely aware of the motivation behind it. What motivates you when you do something good?
