A 2021-22 Chillicothe High School girls’ basketball season which saw a 23-5 varsity season that included two victories over state-tournament top-4 finishers supplemented with 27 junior-varsity and/or freshman-game triumphs in 30 contests reached its ceremonial conclusion last Friday evening with the program’s postseason awards banquet and program at the school. In summarizing the exceptional season, varsity head coach Darren Smith, told the crowd he was “so proud of the effort they gave, of the camaraderie we had, the fun we had. So proud to be associated with these ladies.” While the on-court successes against a very strong schedule led to multiple postseason honors for individual players – sophomore forward Jolie Bonderer was chosen Class 4 All-State by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association, joined senior Essie Hicks on the rugged Midland Empire Conference all-conference first team, and shared all-district status with Hicks and junior all-MEC honorable mention guard Jessica Reeter, Smith – the program’s all-time leader in coaching wins – lauded the entire squad, including those top players, for always keeping their focus – whether in games or practices – on “what was best for the team.” He credited the team’s four senior – from right, Clara Leamer, Lucy Reeter, Ellie Barnett and Essie Hicks – with establishing and promoting with both actions and words – that unselfish credo.
