Kelow Keeps CHS-UCM ‘Pipeline’ Flowing

The valves on the Chillicothe High School-University of Central Missouri athletics pipeline remain open and free-flowing. Having seen multiple CHS graduates across several sports evolve from Hornets to Mules, the connection between here and the Warrensburg university saw current CHS senior and 2021 trackand-field state champion Damarcus Kelow agree officially earlier this month to make that transition next school year. Flanked by his father Mark Kelow and mother Charo Andrus during a brief March 15 ceremony in the CHS commons, Kelow signed his NCAA letter-of-intent to accept a track-and-field scholarship from UCM a week prior to the beginning of his senior season of prep competition. Kelow will seek to become a repeat state champion in the discus throw this spring, while also competing in the shot put, in which he narrowly missed earning a state-meet medal last May. Chillicotheans have fared very well in track and field, particularly in field events, for the Division II school at Warrensburg. In recent years. Jesse Miller was a multiple-times national medalist in jumping events as a Mule and Brett Shaffer was a strong hurdler and Drew Frizzell was a multiple-times national champion as a thrower for UCM about 10-15 years ago. Asked by the C-T if he sees Kelow, who presumably will be tried in all five college throwing disciplines (shot put, discus, javelin, hammer, and weight), as of the ilk of Frizzell and another early 2000s CHS throwing standout, Wade Smith, who competed in D-II national-championship meets for then-William Jewell College, long-time acclaimed Chillicothe throwers coach Ken Stull was emphatic in his endorsement. “He can be every bit as good as them. I won’t be surprised if he were to be a national champion and go to nationals several time.” CHS boys’ head coach Bill Shaffer commented on the latest UCM-bound signee, “When you work hard and keep at it, good things happen. He’s been dedicated to this type of opportunity throughout his high school career. Even with losing (his sophomore season) to COVID-19, he kept the ‘big picture’ in mind.”. Kelow told the C-T Frizzell encouraged him to consider UCM. “His successes (as a Hornet and Mule) have been an inspiration to me,” the current CHS standout confirmed. (PAUL STURM/C-T PHOTO)

Snow Geese Here and Gone

In the last three weeks, our area has had the largest number of snow geese arriving that I’ve ever seen or heard of. Snow geese are migratory and fly through this area in both spring and fall, coming from or going to their nesting ground in the Arctic.
