Hale/Bosworth Boys Champs of Meadville Tourney

A historic, overtime triumph brought the annual Meadville Invitational Tournament to a thrilling conclusion Saturday night. Trailing second-seeded Grundy County R-5/ Newtown-Harris by 11 points at halftime, the Hale/Bosworth Cardinals charged back after intermission to be deadlocked after each of the third and fourth periods, then won the game with an 11-5 advantage in OT to prevail, 59-53.

Lady Hornets’ Full-Court Defensive Pressure Keys Another ‘W:’ CHS basketball girls overwhelm Cameron on own court Wednesday

CAMERON — You can’t accuse veteran, long-successful high school basketball coach Darren Smith of not recognizing a good thing when he sees it. Deep into his eighth winning season at the helm of Chillicothe’s Lady Hornets after a lengthy stretch of similar prosperity guiding Meadville’s boys, Smith saw his squad bury an average-or-better Lawson squad under a 31-3 mid-game points avalanche fueled by full-court defensive pressure Monday in the Cameron Invitational Tournament and prudently considered, “Maybe we ought to try that again next game.” That next game was Wednesday in the second round of pool play in the tourney and matched the Lady Hornets with the red-hot host squad, which entered with a 13-3 record and 13 wins in its last 14 outings.

Fifteen Area Prep Hoops Teams Won Tourney Openers In events being hosted at Meadville, Hamilton, Keytesville, Gilman City, Dearborn

As it traditionally does, the last week of January brought almost-exclusively tournament play to area hardwoods. The exception schools are Braymer, Breckenridge and Hardin-Central, who played among themselves early in the week, including a key game in the Carroll-Livingston Activity Association girls’ title chase.

Lady Hornets Drench Persistent Lawson Again: Monday’s 50-29 win replicated prior two CHS hoops victories

CAMERON — Being that it is sports and that the participants were high school age, there was no guarantee when the Chillicothe High School basketball Lady Hornets took on a capable, relatively-tall Lawson Lady Cardinals squad for a third time in less than three weeks late Monday afternoon that it would play out exactly – or, at least, much – like the prior two.
