Meadville Girls Averted Collapsing Loss Monday, But Fell Wednesday in Tourney

A couple of area high school girls’ basketball teams came out on the right end of the final score in the early-week games, even though they took alternate routes in the homestretch. In first-round play in the Salisbury Invitational tournament Monday, Meadville’s Lady Eagles couldn’t protect a 10-points cushion starting the fourth quarter, but recovered to outscore Carrollton 10-7 in overtime to claim a 56-53 verdict.

CMS Eighth-Grade Basketball Girls Champions of Own Tourney

Chillicothe Middle School’s eighth grade basketball Lady Hornets finished their 2021 season 9-4 Dec. 18 when they earned the championship of their own annual, roundrobin “Hornet Hoops” tournament, defeating Cameron and Marshall, coach Rachael Wheeler reports. Squad members included, from left: Front -Charley Peniston, Maicee Albrecht, Hayden Hansen; Back – Coach Wheeler, Lydia Gabrielson, Olivia Jenkins, Emerson Staton, and Miley Kale. Staton led the Lady Hornets’ offense with a combined 40 points in the two games, while Albrecht chipped in 23. Hanson, Gabrielson, Peniston, Kale, and Jenkins all got involved in the scoring, too, during the tournament and coach Wheeler praised each for playing “great defense.” The coach also related, “The Lady Hornets want to thank all of their supporters, especially Mrs. Smith, Mr. Creekmore, Ms. Abby, Mrs. Baldwin and Mr. Turner for helping make this season a great one!” (PHOTO SUPPLIED/Rachael Wheeler)

Basketball Lady Hornets split with big schools, rise to 7-1

Having battled very well against a squad from the state’s largest classification three days before in sustaining their first loss of the season, Chillicothe High School’s basketball Lady Hornets turned a second-straight contest against a Class 6 opponent into clearcut victory Tuesday, Dec. 21, that will send them into the 2022 portion of the campaign with a sterling 7-1 record.

Wrestling Hornets come away from Moberly empty-handed, record-wise

MOBERLY — The Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets didn’t reap any reward, record-wise, from their participation in the Dec. 17-18 2021 Spartans Duals tournament at Moberly – rechristened as the Sam Richardson Invitational this year in memory of the late former Moberly head coach and widely-known wrestling enthusiast/advocate who died from COVID-19 earlier this year, so they’ll hope the experience they gained and the testing-by-fire the individual team members had in the high-quality event will be the longer-term and more-important payoff.
