’23 Tennis Hornets Fighting for Future After District Non-Team Shortfall

Barring weather issues the past two days, the Chillicothe High School tennis Hornets hosted Richmond in the semifinals of the Class 1 District 15 Tournament yesterday. If they won it and barring any weather complications which delayed the team portion of the district tournament, they’ll roll north right back up Highway 65 to Trenton today for a 4 p.m. district-championship rematch from a year ago.

CHS Track, Field Teams at Home for District Saturday

On the heels of the girls’ team’s first meet championship of the season and matching girls’ and boys’ runnerup finishes in the Midland Empire Conference Championships last week, Chillicothe High School’s track-and-field Hornets and Lady Hornets appear relatively-primed for their most-consequential portion of the season – this Saturday’s Class 3 District 8 meet at their own Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium II, followed by the next weekend’s state-qualifying sectional meet at Warrensburg High School and then Memorial Day weekend’s state meet May 25-27 at Jefferson City. This Saturday’s district meet, involving 12 other schools besides CHS, should begin at 9:30 a.m.

Dragons’ Singers Strike Right Chord in District Track, Field Meet

GLASGOW — They aren’t the harmonizing Brothers Four of 1950s and early ’60s pop music fame, but Tina-Avalon High School’s three Singer brothers can still belt out a sweet melody in track-and-field competition. Paced by defending Class 1 state champion shot putter and junior Tucker, who claimed that event and also ran on an advancing sprint relay, and also featuring twin sophomores Tanner and Tyler, the T-A Singers – along with Lady Dragon Abby Jones – led a very good performance by the southern Livingston County-northern Carroll County school in last Saturday’s Class 1 District 4 meet at Glasgow.

Late-Season Swoon Leaves Baseball Hornets Submerged

After battling for a month to stay close to the .500 mark after a 1-4 start to their 2023 season, Chillicothe High School’s baseball Hornets last week saw virtually all hope of even finishing a couple of games below breakeven this spring vanish. A second-straight walkoff win by Maryville a week ago yesterday effectively was the dagger, the 10-9 Spoofhounds conquest in nine innings pushing CHS’ overall mark to 7-11.

Soccer Lady Hornets Keep Up Chase of Winning Season

A late-season uptick in offense and hopefully return to a fullstrength roster are positive developments for the Chillicothe High School soccer Lady Hornets as they make an uphill bid to finish at or above .500 in 2023. Golf Hornets Take Third in MEC Tourney, Just Miss Second

CAMERON — With their top two players essentially having their customary, strong performances, but an occasional varsity player stepping up strongly, Chillicothe High School’s golf Hornets came oh, so close to placing second in last week’s Midland Empire Conference Championships tournament behind a team that could claim a third state title in four years next week. While no team was expected to mount any sort of challenge to overwhelming favorite St.

Baseball Hornets Pitch Very Well, Still Drop Three of Four

After scrambling to stay within reach of the .500 mark through the first month of their season, the 2023 Chillicothe High School baseball Hornets saw their prospects of ending the spring at or above the break-even mark take a sizable hit last week because they didn’t do much hitting. Held to four or fewer hits in each game, the Hornets lost three of four games, including two of three 1-run games in their own Hornets Baseball Classic tournament.

‘It’s a Family Affair’ – CHS’ Jessica Reeter Joined Mother, Aunt as Cage All-Stater

While not as prolific, numbers-wise, as the football Hornets – whose history is littered with such instances, Chillicothe High School added to its ranks of sibling or multi-generational All-State basketball honorees following the 2022-23 season when CHS-records-setting Lady Hornets senior guard Jessica Reeter was selected to the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 4 All-State squad. With her designation, she joined both her mother Julia (Hinkebein) Reeter and aunt Beth (Hinkebein) Heil as CHS hoops state-level honorees.

Soccer Lady Hornets Face Uphill Terrain Late in Season

The Chillicothe High School soccer Lady Hornets’ 2023 feastor- famine tendency continued last week, leaving a challenging scenario for avoiding a losing season in the final two weeks. Just as head coach Jimmy Chapman’s club was starting to get some recently-injured starters and important reserves back on the pitch for match competition and with the promise of another returning this week, junior attacking midfielder Delanie Kieffer sustained in injury that sidelined her for last Saturday’s 2-0 home loss to Moberly.
