Snagging Season Opens Next Week

Missouri’s annual paddlefish (spoonbill) snagging season will open next week on Wednesday, March 15, and will run through April 30 on all popular snagging waters in the state. Missouri’s in-state spoonbill snagging “hotspots” are Lake of the Ozarks, Harry S. Truman Reservoir, Table Rock Lake and their tributaries A longer season is permitted for snagging in the Mississippi River and will run March 15 through May 15, plus an additional fall season Sept. 15-Dec. 15.

County Cagers on All-Tri-County Conference Teams

Linn County-based teams nearly swept all of the five spots on the recently-announced all-Tri-County Conference girls’ basketball team for the 2022-23 season. Among the 10 players from Meadville, Linn County R-1, or Bucklin/Macon County R-4 to the all-league squads were girls’ topteam picks Korrie Holcer and Madison and Paige Carvajal of state semifinalist Meadville and Linn County R-1 senior Morgan Livingston.

Lady Hornets Make ‘Weak’ Side Foundation of 24th Win

JOSEPH — After testing – with some positive feedback – some additional flavoring through the first half of their Class 4 District 16 Tournament semifinal game against Maryville last Thursday, head coach Darren Smith of the second-seeded Chillicothe High School basketball Lady Hornets had lower-profile members of his squad serve a proven-favorite, basic dish in the second half and got the desired result.

Meadville Girls to Class 1 Basketball State Semis, Finals

In a flashback to the mid-1990s, when a junior-laden squad charged its way into the ranks of the final four Class 1 teams playing and, after finishing fourth, the bulk of that squad returned to win it all the next year, the 2022-23 Meadville High School Lady Eagles – keyed by a dynamic trio of non-senior guards – will be in Springfield tomorrow and Friday as participants in the Class 1 state tournament semifinals and finals. The 29-0, state-records- setting Meadville girls will meet Leeton’s Lady Bulldogs (26-3) in the semifinals at 6 p.m.
