You Record-Setter Yoo: Wrestler Lee State Runnerup

COLUMBIA — Already having set Chillicothe High School standards for girls’ wrestling in multiple statistical categories, Lady Hornets sophomore Yoo Jung Lee continued to etch her name into CHS girls’ athletics history last week by not only earning a state-tournament medal, but finishing second in the 202223 Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 1 Championships. Competing in the 120-pounds division after becoming Chillicothe’s first state qualifier earlier in the month, Lee last Wednesday clinched earning CHS’ inaugural state medal in the still-fledgling distaff sport by gaining an opening-round major decision and then a quarterfinals pin.

CHS’ Miller Earns Third State Mat Medal, Joined by Shipers at Sixth

COLUMBIA — On the positive side of the balance sheet, Chillicothe High School senior wrestling star Brock Miller joined the limited ranks of Hornets 3-times state medal winners during last week’s 2022-23 Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 Championships tournament. On the “down” side, an injury sustained during his battle with familiar foe Cooper Burnsides of Cameron to see which would advance to the 190-pounds championship bout led to that bout ending on a pin of the Hornet and subsequently forced him to concede a medical forfeit in two remaining bouts that, even had he lost to Burnsides (he was trailing at the time), would have given him a chance to ascend as high as third place in the weight’s final tourney standings.

Lady Hornets Close Regular Season on 7-Games Win Streak

MARYVILLE — Having handled Maryville with surprising ease in their second outing of the 2022-23 during the Savannah Invitational tournament not quite three months earlier, the Chillicothe High School basketball Lady Hornets encountered the Lady ’Hounds on Maryville’s floor in their regular-season finale last Thursday and, predictably, found the sledding somewhat tougher. It didn’t prevent them from finishing the regular season on a 7-games winning streak, though.

Meadville Girls Roll, Hale/Bosworth Boys’ District Title Bid Falls Short

MEADVILLE — Last Saturday’s perfunctory coronation of the undefeated, state-top-ranked Meadville Lady Eagles as champions of the Class 1 District 12 high school basketball tournament they hosted last week capped a week of action that also saw Brunswick emerge as the boys’ champion and state-tournament qualifier last Friday. To the surprise of absolutely no one – even the uninformed or disinterested, Meadville High School’s basketball Lady Eagles (27-0) strolled through the Class 1 District 12 Tournament they hosted last week without challenge, ushering them into state-tournament play which tipped off last night at Salisbury with a game against heavy-underdog North Shelby.

CHS Basketball Girls Notch 20th Win

KIRKSVILLE — The Chillicothe High School basketball teams’ journey to Kirksville Feb. 20 – to make up games postponed from the prior week, due to weather and travel conditions – resulted in the Lady Hornets reaching a season milestone and the Hornets continuing their uncomfortable, late-season flirtation with a .500 final record for the season.
