Here’s a day-by-day recap of last week’s C-T-area high school basketball games. Friday, Jan.

BETHANY — Their lineup – and even their coaching roster – having rarely, if ever, been as experienced and strong as it might have been, Chillicothe High School’s wrestling Hornets remained a bit of a patchwork quilt as they managed only one win from three dual matches at South Harrison High School last Thursday.

A third-quarter shutout that was the centerpiece of span of scoreless defense that stretched from late in the second quarter to about three minutes into the fourth turned a reasonably-close game between the Chillicothe High School basketball Lady Hornets and visiting East Buchanan Lady Bulldogs into a runaway last Thursday. Ahead 31-22 with a bit over a half-minute remaining in the first half, Chillicothe uncoiled a 17-0 run which lasted into the last stanza and eventually led to a 56-30 victory, CHS’ fifth in a row and 12th in 15 contests this season.

For a second year in a row, Chillicothe High School’s basketball teams played for the championships of the Lawson Invitational tournament Saturday. For a second year in a row, the outcomes were the same, too, with the Lady Hornets cruising to a third-consecutive crown in three appearances in the event and the Hornets falling to Richmond.

With head coach Chad Smith putting in an appearance early in the day as he continues his recovery from early December heart bypass surgery, Chillicothe High School’s wrestling Hornets had two individual champions – including the coach’s son – and placed third in the team standings in their annual tournament – the Dave Kinen Classic – last Saturday at the middle school fieldhouse. In the boys’ division, Bo Smith won the 285-pounds division, edging a Maryville opponent 2-1 on an escape he made two seconds into the second overtime segment, and senior Brock Miller won by fall in all three of his 215-pounds bouts, the last two of which came against Hornets teammates.

Finally getting to wrestle in 2022-23 without having ridden a bus first, Chillicothe High School’s Hornets split a home triple-dual outing at the middle school fieldhouse last Thursday. They lost to the very good Brookfield team 54-24 and 48-33 to Lawson, but defeated Gallatin 45-24.
