CHS Football Sign-off

Delayed due to a Midland Empire Conference by-law prohibiting public announcement of all-conference team honorees until all teams in a sport have concluded their seasons, Chillicothe High School’s 2022 football season finally was given its sendoff this past Sunday night with the postseason awards dinner/ program at the school district’s Mervyn W. Jenkins Exhibition Building at the Litton Agri-Science Learning Center. In addition to the 21 all-MEC first- or second-team or honorable mention selections spread across 13 players (see accompanying photo), nine players were revealed as having earned Missouri High School Football Coaches Association Academic All-State status, four Hornets were announced as all-district, about a half-dozen intrasquad defensive awards were presented (see accompanying photo), varsity letters announced for 30 players, provisional varsity letters for 21 more, the various, customary “thank yous” expressed by head coach Chad Smith on behalf of the football program, and the Shawn Trager Memorial Scholarship Award to a senior presented (see accompanying photo). The Hornets who achieved Academic All-State criteria include Trent Jacobs, Charlie Walker, Javon Kille, Griff Bonderer, Brody Cairns, Cayden Larson, Max Wagers, Silas Midgyett, and Lane Nickell. Record-Breaking CHS Batterymates Boley, Helton Sign for College Play

An easily-overlooked factor in both the offensive and defensive performances which carried the Chillicothe High School softball Lady Hornets to state runnerup finishes in Missouri Class 3 each of the past two seasons has been catcher Hope Helton, who now is headed on to play at Trenton’s NorthCentral Missouri College the next two school years as she capitalizes on her “A-Plus Program” free tuition opportunity she has earned during high school. As a junior in 2021, she quietly delivered time and time again from the No. 2 spot in the batting order behind record-setting leadoff batter Sophia Luetticke, eventually finishing that season with not only a team-high, but also a team-record 47 runs batted in, while batting .464. Kept in that critical spot as a senior while Kirsten Dunn succeeded Luetticke at the top of the lineup, Helton elevated her batting average to a team-best .481 with a CHS-high .548 on-base rate, as well. In part because Dunn, herself a recent college signee, carried more clout (nine home runs) in her bat that cleared the bases ahead of Helton, the CHS catcher’s RBI total slipped to a still-strong 35 this past fall. She also paced the squad with four triples, seven times being hit with pitches, and striking out a paltry five times in over 150 plate appearances. However, Helton also was pivotal in maximizing the pitching potential of classmate Kinlei Boley the past two years as each earned first-team All-State honors at their respective positions, providing a calm, steady target and receiving Boley’s moving pitches in a way that increased umpires’ likelihood of calling close pitches strikes. Helton also rarely had catchable pitches – whether in the dirt or high or wide – escape her to the backstop. She was not charged with any errors in 222 total chances this past season and was charged with only seven passed balls out of more than 2000 pitches handled. She also took on the pitch-calling responsibility through about the final one-third o
