With basketball and girls’ wrestling having two weeks of preseason practices behind them now, the start of Chillicothe High School winter sports interscholastic competition is not far off, at least for one of those teams. After the basketball Hornets and Lady Hornets will dip a toe in the water Tuesday evening when they host Trenton and Brookfield for “jamboree” scrimmages at the CHS gym, starting at 5 p.m., the girls will tip off their 2022-23 season the following Tuesday, Nov.
COLUMBIA — A sensational 2022 season of Chillicothe High School cross-country running – the most-successful ever, in terms of balanced high performance among each gender – individually and collectively, reached a fitting climax last Saturday with record- setting showings in the Class 3 Missouri State High School Activities Association Championships. Again running the Gans Creek Cross-Country Running Course of rural Columbia, CHS’ largest-ever combined contingent of state-meet competitors – a team plus two individuals from the other gender – generated the most state medalists/ All-State runners ever when young Hornets Luke Thompson and Cain Evans each finished in the top 25 of the boys’ division and matched the highest Chillicothe finish in the team standings when the boys were ninth among the 16 participating teams.
KANSAS CITY — Patrick Mahomes was probably having flashbacks Sunday night to his days at Texas Tech, when he would scramble around like a kid playing sandlot football while routinely throwing the ball 60-plus times in a game. The Chiefs needed all of it — every run, every throw, every yard — to rally past the Tennessee Titans.
COLUMBIA — By almost every account, Dennis Gates won the news conference when he was introduced as the new coach at Missouri, conveying a clear and ambitious vision for a struggling program with unbridled enthusiasm. He’s also been winning on the recruiting trail, quickly improving the Tigers’ talent level not only this season but beyond.
COLUMBIA — Senior Ryan McIntosh of Hamilton’s Penney High School and Samantha “Sam” Sharp of Brookfield each raced to Class 2 state cross-country running meet medals last Saturday. Running as part of the Hornets’ qualifying team, McIntosh followed up his fourthplace district finish with an 11th-place run in the state competition at the Gans Greek Cross-Country Running Course, southeast of Columbia.
SAVANNAH — Amid wet, very chilly conditions, Chillicothe High School’s 2022 football Hornets went into their Class 3 District 8 rematch with the Savannah Savages last Friday thinking they could – with better health of some key players and some reasonable improvement – knock off the higher-seeded Savages and earn a chance to play this week for a district championship. Instead, the 2021 storyline between the two squads played out – only in reverse and the Hornets this week are focusing on what their winter and spring endeavors will be because their gridiron season is over.
The 2022 high school football season for C-T-area teams, which didn’t find a lot of bright spots through the regular season, predictably reached its terminus last Friday at perhaps the earliest date ever or at least in many years.
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Amid a contest in which the defenses for Kentucky and Missouri flexed their muscles most of the afternoon, it was a botched punt snap that proved the difference for the Wildcats in escaping with a 21-17 victory over the Tigers on Saturday.
