CHILLICOTHE – As Fourth of July celebrations approach, the Chillicothe Police Department reminds residents of the city’s fireworks regulations—and a special update for 2025. Typically, fireworks are only permitted within Chillicothe city limits on July 1- 3 between 8 a.m.-10 p.m., and on July 4 from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. However, this year only, an additional day has been approved. Thanks to a resolution passed by the Chillicothe City Council at a city board meeting on June 30, residents will also be allowed to discharge fireworks on Sat., July 5 from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. The motion passed with a 4-1 vote. This is passed for the 2025 Independence Day holiday weekend only.
While the extended celebration is sure to bring fun, officials are urging the public to be mindful of safety and ordinance rules. It remains illegal to manufacture fireworks within city limits, and certain types—like bottle rockets, any form of rocket, and fireworks designed to remain intact upon landing—are strictly prohibited.
The police department also offers these important safety tips:
- Always have adult supervision when children are involved.
- Keep a hose or bucket of water nearby.
- Be aware of your surroundings—especially other children and homes.
- Once fireworks have been used, dispose of debris in a metal container and soak it down or leave it outside until safe for disposal.
It is also encouraged to be mindful and respectful of young children, veterans, elderly, and animals. Violations of the fireworks ordinance can result in citations. For a full list of regulations, visit the city’s code of ordinances at ecode360.com/28070412.
Stay safe, Chillicothe—and enjoy the extended holiday responsibly.
