Author Kerry O’Malley Cerra, whose book, “Just a Drop of Water,” is nominated for Missouri’s highest honor for middle grade literature, will be in Chillicothe Monday and Tuesday. The 2017 visiting author is coordinated through Chillicothe Middle School and Central School. Chula R-3 students will also be participating. While in Chillicothe, the author will give one presentation per grade level at each school and enjoy meeting with smaller groups during mealtimes. “Just a Drop of Water” is Cerra’s first book and is one of only 12 current nominees for the Missouri Association of School Librarians Truman Award. This title is also nominated for top honors in Florida, Maine, Mississippi, and New Jersey, and is the winner of the prestigious Crystal Kite Award and VOYA’s Top Shelf Fiction for Middle Readers – quite a feat for an author’s first offering, according to Laurinda Davison, library media specialist at CMS. For more information on the author and her writing, refer to her website, http://www.kerryomalleycerra.com/ “‘Just a Drop of Water’ is unique in its message and allows young readers who weren’t even born when the events of September 11, 2001 shook our world the opportunity to experience its impact first-hand through the eyes of three eighth-grade boys,” Davison said. “While none of us would ever wish this experience on any generation, Mrs. Cerra’s book provides them a viewpoint we cannot offer in our retelling of that horrific time. And, as an added bonus, this amazing story addresses issues still plaguing our country today – the evils of fear and bigotry and the need for acceptance and understanding.”
