Lovene A. Surber, age 91, of Meadville, died Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Lawson Manor in Lawson.

Lovene A. Surber, age 91, of Meadville, died Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Lawson Manor in Lawson. A funeral service will be Sunday, May 21, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Meadville with Rex Wood officiating. Burial will be in Botts Cemetery north of Meadville. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Lovene Avonelle (Cohoon) Surber was born October 9, 1925, in New Boston. She was the daughter of Victor Gale Cohoon and Catherine B. (Cohoon) Still. On July 20, 1948, Lovene married Meryl W. Surber in Carrollton. He preceded her in death on September 23, 1995. They were married for 47 years and three daughters were born to this union: Janice, Nancy, and Sandra. She was a long time member of the Meadville Church of Christ and also taught Sunday School classes to young girls. Lovene was an active member and former officer of the Busy Bee Extension Club and the Meadville Wednesday Club. Lovene was a talented seamstress, inventive pattern maker, and a constant designer of fashionable outfits for her three daughters and herself. She even made a “leisure suit” for her husband, Meryl. When her daughters were younger she made and dressed them in identical outfits. She devoted many years to the Meadville 4-H Club as the sewing leader. Lovene was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. She kept two large gardens to feed her family, neighbors, and friends. Many children and adults also enjoyed her famous Halloween doughnuts. She is survived by her three daughters, Janice Tracy and husband, Gary, Nancy Beier and husband, Alan, and Sandra Wasem; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; two brothers, Don Cohoon and wife, Leila and Robert Cohoon and wife, Mary Ann; and two sisters, Ruth Cohoon and Vicki Berg. Her parents; and one brother, William Cohoon also preceded her in death.
