Evelyn Joan Mapel, 81, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday evening, December 10, 2017 at her home.
Evelyn Joan Mapel, 81, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday evening, December 10, 2017 at her home. She was born in Albany, Missouri on June 25, 1936, the oldest of five farmer’s daughters, who loved to laugh and tell stories with her sisters Marjorie, Jean Ann, Betty, and Mary Kay. She loved them very much. Evelyn attended Hall Elementary School in St. Joseph, then later moved with her family to Clarksdale, Missouri where she graduated from high school in 1954. After graduation, she went to work for Wyeth Company in St. Joseph. Evelyn married David Eugene Mapel, Sr. on February 20, 1955. He preceded her in death in 2006. Evelyn worked for Inter-Serv at Wesley Center and Calvin Center for 25 years. She served the Lord as organist of King Hill Christian Church for 55 years. She also played the organ for hundreds of weddings and funerals. She was very supportive of the activities her children and grandchildren were involved in, especially sports. She enjoyed cross stitching and crocheting, making hundreds of items for family and friends, as well as afghans and prayer shawls for shut-ins and baby showers. She had a compassionate heart and a giving soul. Evelyn instilled in her children an honest work ethic and caring generosity toward others. She was an avid collector of angels and truly believed they guided her path through her long life, right up to her grand but humble entrance through the Gates of Heaven. Evelyn was also preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Elizabeth Parsons; a precious baby daughter, Karen Elaine; and a beautiful granddaughter, Christina Mapel. Survivors include six of her seven children, David, Jr. (Diana), Chillicothe; Steven (Lori), Liberty; Diane Cameron (Tracy), St. Joseph; Robin Gunion (Clark), Kennewick, WA; Michael, St. Joseph; and Roger (Jerri), St. Joseph; 16 grandchildren, Drew (Melissa), Tyler (Kayla), Sydney (Clayton), Kara, J.C. (Brigette), Levi, Britni, Shannon (Jared), Shelby (Colin), Courtney (Logan), Brady, Spencer, Aaron, Noah, and Lucas; six great-grandchildren, Eli, Jax, Genesis, Sienna, Tre, and Ezra. Evelyn leaves behind a large loving family and many wonderful friends. Though heart-broken, all are so happy that she will be celebrating Christmas in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She lived for her family, making many sacrifices along the way. Along with her husband, she kept them safe, fed and clean, and shared with them the Word of God. Evelyn will be forever missed. She loved looking up at the moon and it was comforting for all to know that wherever they were, throughout the world, they could rest assured that the moon they gazed at was the same one their sister, mother, grandma, GiGi, and friends were also gazing at. Farewell Services are at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, at Meierhoffer Funeral Home. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, at Meierhoffer. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Mosaic Life Care Hospice, as all were grateful for the kindness, gentleness and sincere caring for Evelyn.
