In the key play in this past Tuesday’s home win over Maryville, junior utility player Charley Peniston of the state-ranked 2024 Chillicothe High School softball Lady Hornets efficiently handles a high pitch to put down a sacrifice bunt intended to advance pinch-runner Bryleigh Gillespie from second to third base with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning of a still-scoreless Midland Empire Conference game at Daryl Danner Memorial Park. The play produced a larger harvest than hoped when Maryville’s throw to first got away, letting Gillespie – running for Ali Probasco, who’d led off the inning with a single to center field – score and Peniston to reach second. CHS went on to push across five runs in the inning, all of its scoring in a 5-0 triumph which lifted its records to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the MEC. (PAUL STURM/C-T PHOTO)
