Hornets handle host Marshall Owls 57-24 behind half-dozen wins by fall, three forfeits

MARSHALL, Mo. — With returning state medal winner Dean Adkins III cruising and freshman lightweight Colton Sewell delivering the match’s quickest victory, the Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets commenced their 2016-17 season Thursday night with a solid 57-24 dual-match triumph over the host Marshall Owls.
Coming off a school-best 25-1 dual-matches mark a year ago, the Hornets won six of the 11 contested bouts by fall and also collected three forfeits when Marshall was open at 106, 120, and 220 pounds. The dual’s lone bout which went the 6-minutes distance was at 138 pounds, where CHS senior Bryce Larson prevailed 5-2 over Hunter Hostetter.

Adkins, last year’s Class 2 fifth-place finisher at the state tournament in the 170-pounds weight class, had no difficulty in his 2016-17 debut.
Still at 170, the Hornets senior twice took down his opponent, then “cut” him (voluntarily released), before following up his third takedown with a pin at 1:47.
That was three seconds longer than classmate Chase Minnick needed to take a fall from his 132-pounds opponent. The only scoring done in the bout was Minnick’s takedown which eventually led to the pin.
Minnick’s victory time was exactly twice that needed by newcomer Sewell to gain his first high school mat triumph in the 113-pounds category.
A kids’ wrestling veteran, Sewell quickly dropped Jaden Riley and soon had him on his back for a 3-points near-fall. Although Riley momentarily managed to get his shoulders off the mat, the Hornets youngster – one of four CHS freshmen making the varsity lineup for the season opener – soon had them down again, this time for the second required for awarding of the pin after 52 seconds.

Joining Adkins, Sewell, and Minnick in stopping their opponents were Adkins’ fellow 2016 state-tournament qualifier Kayde Burton, as well as sophomore heavyweight Keegan Valdez and senior Zach Blixt. All three went into a second period, but not a third.
Ahead 9-2 after two minutes, Burton finished rapidly after the second period started, reversing his opponent and winning his 195-pounds bout at 2:13. Valdez used a half-minute of the second segment, during which he doubled his 5-2 lead to 8-2 before getting the 285-pounds fall. Blixt jumped out to a 4-0 lead at 145, then earned his second 2-point near-fall while increasing his lead to 10-4 before ending the action in 3:51.

Larson’s decision saw him earn the bout’s only two takedowns, but he needed the second one to have a bit of breathing room at the end.
The Hornet opened the scoring in the second period with an escape, then got his initial takedown to lead 3-0 after two. On top at the beginning of the last stanza, Larson was assessed a penalty point before Hostetter escaped his control to narrow the score to 3-2. The second takedown restored the 3-points lead and Larson kept it there.

Not needing to actually wrestle to add six points to the CHS team scoring total were juniors Zack Boyles at 120 pounds and Erek Brose at 225 and freshman Elijah Reynolds.
Dropping their opening 2016-17 bouts were 126-pounder Lavery Jones, 182-pounder Trace Staton, and two freshmen middleweights – Deon Reynolds at 152 and Isaih Kille at 160.

Mostly of Chillicothe’s approximately 30 2016-17 wrestlers will be in action this weekend when the varsity competes in a tournament at Pleasant Hill and others participate in a tourney for freshmen and sophomores at Excelsior Springs.
