CHS senior claimed 132-pounds title in 14-teams event Dec. 2-3, 2016

PLEASANT HILL, Mo. — Behind senior Chase Minnick’s seven bout wins that made him the 132-pounds champion, the Chillicothe (Mo.) High School wrest-ling Hornets captured the team title of the 2016 Steve Leslie Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday.
Minnick won his first five contested bouts by fall before reaching the championship bout on an
8-3 decision over the hosts’ Chance Sullivan. In the finals, Minnick went back to a quicker finish, pinning Mikey Crockett of St. James at 4:36.
That paced a team performance which generated 6411⁄2 points, 46 more than runnerup Kirksville. The host Roosters were a distant third with 5191⁄2.
In addition to Minnick’s first-place finish, CHS’ Hornets had a runnerup – sophomore Lavery Jones at 126 pounds. He won six of eight bouts, the second loss being by 7-2 decision in the title bout against Gaige Brunell of P-Hill.
A couple of CHS grapplers – sophomore 285-pounder Keegan Valdez and senior 170-pounder Dean Adkins III produced third places. Adkins won eight of his nine bouts, falling only in the semifinals by 6-2 decision to Joey Ewalt of Boonville. Valdez won seven times, losing by major decision in the semifinals to another Boonville entry, Keandre Anderson, before pinning an Owensville man in 1:41 in the third-place bout.
The Hornet with the third-best record on the day actually was 195-pounder Kayde Burton. He won seven of his eight bouts, but happened to be paired against eventual runnerup Marshaun Swift of Grain Valley in the first round of the 8-man championship bracket and lost 3-1.
