Hornets take first six bouts from Trenton Tuesday – four by fall and two by forfeit – en route to 54-18 home triumph

CHILLICOTHE, Mo. — Four wins by pin and two “open” weight classes for opponent Trenton let the Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets race to a maxed-out 36-0 lead after six bouts Tuesday and they rolled on to a 54-18 home victory over THS’ Bulldogs.
The Hornets, winners in 16 of their 20 dual matches now in 2017-18, ended up with five wins by fall – the only addition after the early blitz coming in the anticlimactic 285-pounds final bout. CHS’ Keegan Valdez pinned Jarvis Collis six seconds before the would-be end of the opening period.
The early Chillicothe dominance saw newly-crowned Midland Empire Conference 113-pounds champion Connor Keithley, Zack Boyles, Colton Sewell, and Lavery Jones terminate their bouts early. In addition, 106-pounder Sheldon Rader and Jessee Greer at 132 received forfeits when Trenton had no one at their weights.
Later, Donald McCracken would get a forfeit at 160 pounds before the Hornets gained their last two wins of the evening via decisions from Isaac Washburn at 170 and MEC champ Kayde Burton at 182.
Trenton’s wins were by Jadan Whitney at 195, pinning CHS’ Erek Brose, Mason Owen at 220 with a 12-3 major decision over Matt Callen, Eric Lovett by 10-2 major decision over Dawson Wheeler at 145, and Noah Lewis on a 12-2 major decision over 152-pounder Kaleb Mullikin.
Chillicothe’s fastest contested victory of Tuesday's match – aside from the walkovers – came from junior Jones at 138 pounds. He stuck his opponent after 62 seconds.
Also prevailing in the opening period was senior 120-pounder Boyles, who used his grab-and-cut strategy to build a sizable lead before going for the pin and getting it seven seconds before the close of the first segment.
Sewell used only 21 seconds of the second period before being able to call it a night at 126 pounds.
Keithley, a freshman, had a nice, but hard-earned, lead over his Bulldogs foe before getting his shoulder blades to the mat simultaneously at 4:45.
Chillicothe’s wrestlers will be back out on the road Thursday, going to Lawson to face both the host Cardinals and Lathrop in a double-dual.
The CHS wrestlers will have their third and last home outing next Tuesday, Jan. 30, when Marceline and Centralia make a visit to the middle school fieldhouse for a 5:30 p.m. double-dual. That will be the Hornets’ “Senior Night,” with four team members to be saluted.
