Month after losing 1-nil at home on Savages goal in last five minutes, CHS senior's fifth tally of year in 55th minute, Hedrick/team's fourth shutout cap Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2018) regular-season finale

SAVANNAH, Mo. — Saddled with a gut-wrenching, 1-0 home defeat by Savannah’s Savages almost a month earlier when Kyle Johnson exploited a lapse in their defense to dribble in and score from about 15 yards inside the last five minutes of regulation time, the Chillicothe High School soccer Hornets both balanced the scales and propelled themselves toward next week’s district tournament Wednesday, recording a 1-0 triumph of their own, although in less-dramatic manner.
Hornets senior midfielder Brennan Munson cashed in on a scoring chance created by forward Mason Baxter in the 55th minute, delivering the only tally of Thursday’s non-conference match.
Munson’s fifth goal of the season – second-most on the Hornets to sophomore Baxter’s eight – allowed Chillicothe (6-12) to claim its fourth shutout triumph of the season. Senior Daniel Hedrick has been the goalkeeper for all four “bagels,” turning aside all four Savannah shots on goal Wednesday.
Baxter’s “dime” was his third assist of the year, increasing his team-pacing points total to 11. Munson has three assists himself.
Chillicothe out-shot Savannah (9-7) 5-4 Wednesday with the “extra” attempt being the one that went in the net for the game-winner.
The soccer Hornets will have their Class 2 District 15 tournament, which involves only four teams, on their home turf at Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium next week.
They will meet Kansas City: Northeast (4-6-2) in a semifinals clash at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 23) after top-seeded Kansas City: St. Pius X squares off with Kansas City charter school Frontier STEM.
Tuesday’s winners will move into next Thursday’s 6 p.m. championship match.
