Host Lawson uses Hornets' lone error to plate second-inning run, makes it stand up for 1-0 non-conference triumph March 18. Brandsgaard had two hits, HBP for CHS in loss

LAWSON, Mo. — The Chillicothe (Mo.) HS baseball Hornets out-hit the host Lawson Cardinals in CHS’ 2019 season opener Monday (March 18), but the Hornets’ only error of the game led to a second-inning run that eventually proved to be the game’s only scoring as Lawson gained a 1-0 non-conference triumph at home.
No details on how the Lawson run was produced were available at the time of this posting.
While CHS did out-hit the 2-0 home team, it was by only a 3-2 margin and the Cardinals – waiting out four walks to the Hornets’ two with each side having one batter plunked – ended up with a 7-6 edge in batters reaching base.
Taking the bad-luck losing decision was Chillicothe was junior righthanded starting pitcher Jaden Winder. He went two innings and allowed one hit, one walk, the hit batsman, and the lone, unearned tally. Winder whiffed three.
Throwing the last four innings scorelessly for Chillicothe was sophomore righty Mason Baxter. He also surrendered only a single hit, but did walk three. He struck out six.
Chillicothe returning All-State catcher Westley Brandsgaard picked up where he left off last year, offensively.
After posting an on-base rate of nearly .600 last season, meaning he averaged reaching on a hit, walk, or hit by pitch six out of every 10 plate appearances, the lefthanded-hitting junior got aboard all three times up to bat Monday. He stroked a pair of singles and was hit by a pitch.
The other Hornets hit was a Winder single. CHS left five runners on base.
While Chillicothe’s pitching pair was combining for nine strikeouts, 10 Hornets batters went down on strikes. CHS drew only two walks – one each by Winder and junior Bradley Riley.
CHS’ diamond squad is scheduled to visit Richmond for 4:30 p.m. play Tuesday (March 19), weather and field conditions permitting.
